"Lite" Summer Schedule

We are continuing some school work through the summer. It is just so hot that there's not much to do anyway. Also ds needs to keep reading! Here are the basics of what we're doing:

For 10 yo DS

  • Bible

  • Mathematics

  • Poetry

  • Dictation

  • Reading to Mom

  • Copywork

  • Mom reads one chapter of one book of History, Biography, Geography, Natural History, Science, or Literature (Correspond readings with timeline book and map)

  • Art & Handicrafts (these happen incidentally)

For 17 yo DD (who actually has enough credits to graduate but we're waiting so she can take dual credit classes this fall)

  • Bible

  • Literature / written narration

  • History / written summary

  • Math (finishing Alg. II)

DD's looks shorter than DS's but in reality he finishes first! Each of his lessons only takes about 15 min or less depending on the lesson. DD has to read whole chapters and write narrations so this takes a while.

All in all we are done by lunch if we start early enough, and we are keeping up some good habits and not forgetting everything we learned before the next school term.

Best Homeschool Time

I wanted to just say that this has probably been one of our best school years ever. DS is finally getting into the groove of his lessons. I guess all the books and articles I read are true. Most boys just "begin" to shine at around age 10. If I could do anything over again, I would have relaxed a bit more with him. I say that and yet we've always been a somewhat relaxed homeschool family. We aren't super academic, nor outside activity oriented. But there is this pressure to perform as homeschoolers. Everyone watches to see if you are "doing it right". So I have pushed him a bit too hard in the past to keep him "up with the ps-ers". It didn't work. He didn't read, he didn't spout off math facts. In fact memory drills are like sending bamboo shoots up this kid's fingernails. He despises spouting facts, but loves to tell me stories and adventures he makes up in his head. I hope I can encourage and coach him rather than fill his head with facts. I know that God has made him the way he is and me the way I am. I pray that I can compliment his personality and learning style rather than thwart it.

How we do studied dictation with a "delayed" reader

This is how I am doing studied dictation. I'm sure there are other specific ways to go about it but this is what I am doing and it has shown to be a GREAT method of improvement in my ds's reading, writing, and spelling.

I choose a passage from a book. We first began with a Bible passage, then one from his Sonlight George Washington book, and right now we are using a page from "And Then What Happened Paul Revere?". Now you must know that ds still does "Explode the Code" workbooks too, because he is a delayed reader and it is all just beginning to click. These workbooks help me too, because I can point out rules he's learning in ETC during the dictation session. So these two lessons cross over quite a bit which is helpful for ds.

I took the page of the book I wanted to use for dictation and actually just photocopied it and put the page on a clipboard. Depending on how difficult the passage, I have ds read a sentence or two or the whole paragraph. I use a highlighter to mark various words, blends, digraphs etc. With the Bible passage, it was a couple of sentences, with a reader like Paul Revere, we read the whole page. The page I chose is part picture, part text so it's not too much for him.

We read the text, then I choose three words for him to work on spelling. We were using a wipe off board and using the CM method for spelling.

The CM spelling method is simple. You just write the word out, and have the child "take a picture" of it with their eyes, give them a few seconds, I basically count one second for each letter. Then have the child close their eyes and spell the word back. Then they write it down. If they begin to make a mistake, erase it right away. CM never wants them to see the word misspelled, she wants only a picture of the correct way to impress in their minds.(This is where modern education and CM differ, at PS they are allowed to use "inventive spelling"). We do this part every day. Choosing three words a day, sometimes the same words, sometimes a few more, but only three per day to work on. I want to make sure he can spell all the words he needs to by Friday when I dictate a portion of the passage.

I mentioned that we used a white board, but beginning this week I started making an index card with each word on it with a sharpie, and I just have him spell the word with pencil/paper.

On Friday we get out a composition notebook that he writes his dictation in. I let him look at the passage once more, noting the words he worked on. Then I dictate a portion of the passage to him and he writes it (note: if there is a proper noun that I haven't had him spell, I will write that out for him to copy, CM did do this too I believe). I do not repeat, but just dictate a portion at a time. I do however still have him erase if he begins to write a word wrong, not wanting him to "see" it incorrectly.

Now some children may be able to do more than this, but as I said, he is a bit "delayed". All I can say is that since beginning this method in January, I have seen such great improvement! He even wrote his own short narration and spelled everything correctly the other day!!! I didn't think that would happen for a few years yet!

One more thing, we use the same passage for a few weeks, dictating a different sentence at the end of each week.

I have decided that for the Paul Revere passage, I am going to dictate the whole thing, doing a sentence or portion of a sentence each week until he has written the whole thing. My son is also allergic to pencils so I do have to keep the lessons short, this whole thing takes less than 20 min.

I'd like to add that we use a product from Little Giant Steps called digit span, just the other day I realized that this dictation/spelling method is similar to their neurodevelopmental programs like digit span. No wonder it is working!

Checklist for Homeschool Tracker

We've been using Homeschool Tracker for our assignment sheets and record keeping. But there are so many things to remember to add to my children's assignment sheet each day I had to make myself a checklist. Here's what it looks like:(I've blacked out my dc's names)

The green one on the left is ds 4th grade, and the pink one on the right is dd 11th grade.
I guess this is sort of our schedule, but we don't necessarily follow this order. I just need to order the assignments so I won't forget anything!

Play

Anyone that knows my youngest ds knows that he is a "player". I mean he plays, plays, plays. So much so that it gets in the way of other things! Another thing about him is that he doesn't always seem excited about things right away, and it takes him a while to absorb things.

It's been a couple of weeks since we took our trip to that concert but just this week he has begun to play "concert" in his room. He has taken action figures, marbles, people made of pipe cleaners, books for a stage and stadium, flashlights,a blacklight he got for his birtday, and various other accessories and he has been putting on miniature concerts in his room. Complete with fire, strobe lights, spot lights, the works! He never ceases to amaze me at what he comes up with in his imagination. I'm glad we homeschool so he has the time to do these things.

Week of Feb 17-23rd

This week has been the longest week! I don't know why but it just seemed to crawl by.
We were pretty consistent in our school work, even getting done early some days. YAY! DS is doing so well with his reading, just moving forward in leaps and bounds. He is actually asking to read to me every night! How can I say no? I can't!

It was our turn to clean the church this week, we got done in record time! It's a great ministry to teach my children to serve, not just teaching and singing, but cleaning toilets. Yes somebody's got to clean the toilets for Jesus right? ;o)

DD started a new essay/speech class this week. I'm so glad she will be able to perform a speech for someone other than us. I'm looking forward to see what topic she chooses.

I'm really getting into my Homeschool Tracker Program. At first I really struggled with setting it up, but now it makes our days go so smoothly. I wish I'd done it years ago!

Week of...

I haven't posted a weekly summary in about a month! I'll do my best to catch up.

Dd got her learner's permit for driving! Woo Hoo! Just what I wanted, another teenage driver! LOL

A boy I used to babysit's father passed away and I attended his funeral.

At church we had a VBS kick off luncheon to brainstorm for this coming year. The Lord led us out on our own to do a VBS no one else is doing. We're writing it ourselves! I'm excited about what He is going to do and already IS doing. I'll post about that later.

Youth had True Love Waits banquet Wed the 13th.

We had a quiet Valentine's day at home, DH brought home pizza and I didn't have to cook. Yay!

Went to a friend's baby shower, the baby was already here and he was so precious. :)

At church I got to hold a newborn that wasn't even 5lbs yet. She was soooo tiny, she looked like a doll!

DD and I are reading "The Grapes of Wrath" and she noted that "they cuss a lot in this book". Normally we avoid very worldly books, and I've never read this book in order to make a pre-judgment and am reading it along with her now, but the themes in the book bring good discussions for us. We always try to look with a biblical worldview at things like this. Sometimes we need to see from the safety of our own home how people live without the Lord in their life. I'm not sure how the book turns out but for now I see such false worship through the characters in the book. If you've read the book I'd like to know your comments on it.

I can't think of anything else noteworthy at the moment. When I do I'll write another post.

Week of Jan. 13th & 20th

This week has been full of babies! Two dear friends gave birth this week with Madison being born on the 18th ( my dgs birthday!) and Weston being born this morning. Both mothers and babies are doing well. Praise the Lord!

Last weekend was very full. Saturday we went to dgs's birthday party and then to the school Talent Show where we won 2nd place with our Krew's blacklight puppet show. Sunday we did children's church and another puppet show during our church's ministry fair. Wednesday we did the show again for the youth.

It was a busy few days and I'm glad tomorrow is Saturday and the only thing I have to do is clean the church, otherwise it's a day of rest.

We got a lot of school done this week too, along with Nannie's dr. appt and dh taking the week off just to rest and relax.

Week of Dec. 30 - Jan. 6

Well, this week is a complete blur. I worked 4 days (a lot for me) and got waaaay behind on laundry. I think I'm caught up enough to start all over. ;)
We had an eventful Friday that began for me about 5:30 am.
I got up and had a little quiet time, showered etc before getting the kids up.
We left about 7:30 to take the dogs to the vet for their annual vaccines. Nannie needed to get blood work done while fasting so we went to her doctor's office first for that. Well, of course something that is supposed to be quick turned into about 45 minutes. The kids, the dogs and I all waited in the car. Then off to the vet! Not too long there, but in the midst of all this, dh's debit card was "eaten" by the ATM machine that morning and he had to leave it and head on into work, so I stopped by the bank to retrieve it or find out what happened to it (another wait in the car for the dogs and kids). The girl at the bank didn't let me have the card back, "our policy" she says. So I have to get his card replaced. ugh! So aggravated, but determined to get back home, drop off the dogs, head back out again for grocery shopping, our little dog proceeds to poop in her basket, we stop the car, dd lets her out on a leash to finish the deed.... this dog, don't ask me how, gets out of her collar and runs all over the cow pasture making her deposits! ACK!!!! I'm totally frustrated at this point as we look like keystone cops trying to catch this dog. Finally, I decide that's it! She's getting left! And for some unknown reason, she runs toward the van, I open the door and she comes right to me. I grab her by the scruff of the neck and toss her to dd and we're off! We get home, let her into the back yard with a swat and we all catch our breath and head back out to the car for our other errands and shopping. After that things went pretty smoothly.
Friday night we went to a lock-in with our puppet team to plan and practice some new shows. More on that here. We stayed up all night, slept all morning, then went back to town for auditions for a local talent show. Got up this morning, went to church, taught children's church, came home, did a bit of desperately needed housework, back to church for more puppet planning and practice back in the car headed out for a 120 mile round trip to pick up dgrandson and back home by about 10:30.

Whew! I'm going to bed.

Week of Dec. 23

Where did the week go? Christmas was a wonderful, relaxing day for us. I love Christmas day! We went to Christmas Eve candlelight service which was very sweet. I worked a couple of days and the kids did some school.
Yesterday we went to a baby shower for my niece at La Madeleine's it was so much fun! She's having a girl so there was lots of pink!
(Did I mention the cheesecake?)

That's about it for this week. I had the 'blahs' a couple of days but otherwise we're all doing well. Praise the Lord!

Who knew???

If I had known waaaay back at the beginning of homeschooling that my children would be more independent and get more accomplished by this simple little change in the way I plan I would have saved tons of money and time along the way! I thought that the way *I* work and loved to make forms would mean that *they* would love it too. Not so. One simple little change has made the world of difference in our homeschool this year. So simple, it makes me want to do the "I could've had a V-8" sound on my forehead. Wanna know what it is? Daily lists. Yup. That's it. I fought it all the way. I thought, "It'll waste too much paper, it would make more work for me.. etc. etc." But in reality my older dd likes to see what to do all laid out and she likes to cross off lists! Who knew? I thought she should like charts with all their squares side by side, you know the way most school planners are laid out. I've tried every visual version of charts there is, weekly vertical, weekly horizontal, 12 week charts, you name it. Now we have a daily list and I just fill in the page/lesson numbers and they do the rest. Actually 17yo dd already knows what to do and I fill in 9yo ds' list.

It's not overwhelming seeing all the things you haven't done, and for me the charts with "holes" would make me crazy thinking we weren't doing enough.

I give the credit for this discovery to Homeschool Tracker Plus (even though at the time of this writing I am not using this program, but may pick it back up after the holidays).

We are getting much more accomplished on a daily basis now, which is VERY important since I'm working part-time. I need all the help I can get!

Week of Nov. 5

Each week is different in our home as far as a schedule goes. Things we had to work around this week:
  • dental appt for ds 9 - two fillings, one extraction (appt #1 of 3) :(
  • trading cars with oldest dd and having dgs for 3 days (funeral on her in-laws side of the family)
  • mom working 3 days from 6am-3pm

Considering all that, we still got some school work done and believe it or not, even a load of laundry or two!

Handwriting

Here is one of the handwriting worksheets ds has been doing while I'm at work. I think he's doing very well for a boy who's allergic to pencils, paper, words, books, sitting still.... well you get the idea. ;)

Here's a copywork sample.

Mini Office

I've been working on a project for my 9yo ds trying to make as many things easy for him to work independently when I'm at work. Of course Nannie is near by and 16 yo dd is here to supervise him, but she is busy doing her own work and so he needs things he can do on his own. I have never had him tested for any LD but he is visual-spatial and is a "late bloomer". I can honestly say he is moving by leaps and bounds this year already.

I wish I could take a picture but all of our cameras are broken. :(

I'll link to some samples that I got my ideas from. A lot of these are for younger children but I just used the ideas and made my own charts.

http://www.busyteacherscafe.com/mini_offices.htm

Our Math Mini-Office is two green file folders taped together. Inside I put a Star Wars Addition Facts chart, just using Star Wars pictures for fun. ;) I put a left/right hand since he still forgets these sometimes. I added a multiplication table, months of the year, days of the week money equalities, shapes, and a touch math chart. There is still room to add more things as we go.

Getting geared up for the new school year

Most folks have already begun their school work, and we have been doing the basics but we will actually begin our "official" school year next week.

I am working outside the home part time now and of course just found out that I have three full days of work scheduled next week and one of the days off is the day my mom gets her monthly check and has a doctor's appointment. So it should be interesting to say the least. The LAST thing I feel like doing when I get home from work is reading aloud. But ds still needs some things read aloud to him.

I'm hoping to get the week organized and scheduled so that we accomplish much.

I have entered all of our assignments into homeschool tracker and printed out each day's list. I also printed any handwriting worksheets, copywork and drill sheets for ds and put them into folders labeled with the day of the week. Then I will stack the books needed underneath with the folder on top and the assignment sheet papercliped to the outside of the folder.

I made ds a "bookstack" box to put these in for him to work out of and purchased a black dishpan for him to move them to as he finishes. Then when I come home I'll look through the pan and check his work.

Getting ready for next year

For 9yo ds we are trying Sonlight this coming year. I've always been intrigued but it seemed confusing and wayyy too expensive. But I met a friend who has used Sonlight for years and she walked me through it step by step. I came home really wanting to try it, but still it seemed out of our budget. But then another friend announced to me that she was switching to Sonlight and how she had bought things used and was collecting the needed materials here and there. Mostly on e-bay.

So here we are, giving it a go. We're doing Sonlight 3 4-day. I just received my IG (Instructor's Guide) today and am looking it over and am really getting excited! We enjoyed the change of pace this past year with Christian Cottage and I'm not convinced we are saying good-bye to them just yet.

We'll see. I just want to make things simple for me and my dc. Since reading and math take so much time, I needed something we can just pick up and do, but with a little more structure than Ambleside which we've always used in some form or fashion.

I'd like to post on how I'm organizing the year. I'll do that another day.
